Lactulose is a non-digestible beta-glycoside carbohydrate. Due to the lack of human enzymes it is not hydrolyzed (not broken down) in the upper sections of the gastrointestinal tract.
Lactulose enters the colon unchanged, where it is broken down by the colon flora (bifido- and lactobacteria) to form low-molecular organic acids, which leads to a decrease in pH of the intestinal contents.

How to take, the dosage
Adults – 2 teaspoons 2 times a day (10 ml 2 times a day);
Children – 1 teaspoon 2 times a day (5 ml 2 times a day) with meals, for 7-14 days.
Contraindications
Overdose
In case of overdose, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur, which requires adjusting the dose of Lactusan.
If high doses are used for a long time while treating hepatic encephalopathy, the patient may develop electrolyte imbalance due to diarrhea.
