Lactulose is a non-digestible beta-glycoside carbohydrate. Due to the lack of human enzymes it is not hydrolyzed (not broken down) in the upper sections of the gastrointestinal tract.
Lactulose enters the colon unchanged, where it is broken down by the colon flora (bifido- and lactobacteria) to form low-molecular organic acids, which leads to a lower pH of the intestinal contents.

How to take, the dosage
Adults – 2 teaspoons 2 times a day (10 ml 2 times a day);
Children – 1 teaspoon 2 times a day (5 ml 2 times a day) with meals, for 7-14 days.
Interaction
Neomycin, antibiotics, as well as magnesium-, aluminum- and calcium-containing antacids reduce the effectiveness of lactulose. Severe diarrhea is possible with concomitant use of laxatives.
Special Instructions
In case of signs of diarrhea, the dose of Lactusan should be reduced by half.
Contraindications
Side effects
In the first days of taking Lactusan, flatulence may occur, which passes within 3 days.
Sometimes there is a laxative effect.
Overdose
In case of overdose, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur, which requires adjusting the dose of Lactusan.
If high doses are used for a long time while treating hepatic encephalopathy, the patient may develop electrolyte imbalance due to diarrhea.
