Lactulose is a non-digestible beta-glycoside carbohydrate. Due to the lack of human enzymes it is not hydrolyzed (not broken down) in the upper sections of the gastrointestinal tract.
Lactulose enters the colon unchanged, where it is broken down by the colon flora (bifido- and lactobacteria) to form low-molecular organic acids, which leads to a lower pH of the intestinal contents.
Under the influence of Lactusan the absorption of ammonia by large intestine and its elimination from the body increases, acidophilic bacteria growth is stimulated (including
Clinical effect comes within 2-3 days after the start of administration.

Pharmacological effect
Lactulose is an indigestible beta-glycosidic carbohydrate. Due to the lack of appropriate enzymes in humans, it is not hydrolyzed (not broken down) in the upper sections of the gastrointestinal tract.
Lactulose enters the colon unchanged, where it is broken down under the influence of colon flora (bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) to form low molecular weight organic acids, which leads to a decrease in the pH of the intestinal contents.
Under the influence of Lactusan, the absorption of ammonia by the colon and its removal from the body increases, the growth of acidophilic bacteria (including lactobacilli) is stimulated, the proliferation of proteolytic bacteria is suppressed and the formation of nitrogen-containing toxic substances, released by the proteolytic flora and playing an important role in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy, is reduced.
The clinical effect occurs within 2-3 days from the start of administration
Special instructions
If signs of diarrhea appear, the dose of Lactusan should be reduced by 2 times.

Interaction
Neomycin, antibiotics, as well as magnesium, aluminum and calcium-containing antacids reduce the effectiveness of lactulose. With the simultaneous use of laxatives, severe diarrhea may develop.
Overdose
