Ketosteril is a combination drug.

It is a source of essential amino acids with minimal nitrogen administration. Ketone analogs of amino acids in the body are enzymatically transaminated into the corresponding L-amino acids, breaking down urea.

The drug promotes utilization of nitrogen-containing metabolic products and anabolism of proteins, while reducing serum urea concentrations. It improves nitrogen metabolism. Reduces the concentration of potassium, magnesium and phosphate ions in the blood.

In systematic use of the drug the improvement of patients with chronic renal insufficiency has been noted. In a number of cases it is possible to delay start of dialysis.

Indications

Protein-energy deficiency, prevention and treatment of disorders in adults and children from 3 years of age caused by altered protein metabolism in chronic renal failure and with protein restriction in the diet.

It is mainly used in patients with chronic renal failure with glomerular filtration rates below 25 ml/min, which does not preclude use at glomerular filtration rates above 25 ml/min.

How to take, the dosage

Ingestively, with meals, without chewing. Adults and children from 3 years of age – 1 tablet 5 kg/day or 0.1 g/kg/day. If not prescribed otherwise, take 3 times a day.

Duration of use: Ketosteril® is administered during the entire period when glomerular filtration rate is below 25 ml/min. In the pre-dialysis period, a dietary protein intake of no more than 40 g per day is recommended (depending on the degree of chronic renal failure). In patients on dialysis, protein intake should meet the accepted standards.

The usual dose for an adult (body weight 70 kg) is 4-8 tablets 3 times a day. The usual dose for children is 1 tablet/5 kg/day.

The recommended protein content of food for children from 3 to 10 years old is 1.4-0.8 g/kg/day, from 10 years old it is 1-0.6 g/kg/day.

Interaction

In concomitant administration of drugs containing calcium, serum calcium levels may increase.

As uremic symptoms decrease under the influence of Ketosteril, the dose of concomitant aluminum hydroxide should be reduced accordingly.

In order not to impair absorption in the intestine, drugs that form hard-to-solve compounds with calcium (e.g., tetracyclines, quinolones, drugs containing iron, fluoride, and estramustine) should not be taken concomitantly with Ketosteril.

There should be an interval of at least 2 hours between taking Ketosteril and such drugs.

Special Instructions

Application in renal dysfunction: Ketosteril is used for the entire period when glomerular filtration rate is less than 25 ml/min.

In case of hypercalcemia, it is recommended to reduce the dose of vitamin D taken. If hypercalcemia persists, the dose of Ketosteril as well as other calcium sources should be reduced.

Calcium levels should be monitored regularly and serum phosphate levels should be reduced.

Ketosterol should be taken with meals to improve its absorption and conversion to appropriate amino acids. Sufficient caloric intake is required.

Contraindications

In hereditary phenylketonuria, it should be noted that the drug contains phenylalanine.

Side effects

In some cases, hypercalcemia may develop.

In this case it is recommended to decrease vitamin D intake. If hypercalcemia persists, decrease the dose of Ketosteril® and other calcium sources.
