Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic agent from the oxidant group.
It also has a hemostatic effect.
In contact with damaged skin and mucous membranes hydrogen peroxide releases active oxygen and mechanically cleanses and inactivates organic substances (proteins, blood, pus).
The antiseptic action of hydrogen peroxide is not sterilizing, its use is only a temporary reduction in the number of microorganisms.
Indications
For washing and gargling in stomatitis, angina, gynecological diseases.
Small superficial wounds, small capillary bleeding from superficial wounds, nosebleeds.
Active ingredient
Composition
Active substance:
Medical hydrogen peroxide 7.5 to 11 g (depending on the actual hydrogen peroxide content of the initial substance is equivalent to a hydrogen peroxide content of 3 g (30 to 40%));
How to take, the dosage
Externally, topically.
1-3% solution is used for external application; 0.25% solution for gargling of the mouth and throat, application on mucous membranes (3% solution is diluted with water in 1:11 ratio).
Damaged skin or mucous membranes shall be treated with a cotton or gauze swab soaked with the drug solution. The swabs should be held with tweezers. Jet irrigation of the wound surface is possible.
Interaction
The hydrogen peroxide solution is unstable in an alkaline environment, in the presence of metal salts, complex radicals of some oxidants, as well as in light and heat.
Special Instructions
It is not recommended to use the product under occlusive dressings. Eye contact should be avoided! Do not use for cavity irrigation!
Wound treatment with hydrogen peroxide solution does not guarantee against infection with tetanus and other wound infections.
The 3% solution is used orally in toxicological practice as an antidote (in combination with 3% acetic acid solution) in potassium permanganate poisoning.
Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and mechanisms. No effect.
No special precautions are required when disposing of unused drug.
Contraindications
Sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide.
Side effects
Allergic reactions (rare), burning sensation in the wound area.
Overdose
Symptoms: irritation of upper respiratory tract (burns, laryngo-, bronchospasm); if ingested – irritation of gastrointestinal mucous membranes, hemolysis, hemoglobinuria; lethal dose – about 3 g.
Treatment: gastric lavage with 0.5% sodium thiosulfate solution, sodium bicarbonate solution, intravenous infusion of sodium thiosulfate 30% – up to 300 ml.
