Guttalax Express, rectal 10 mg 6 pcs

Guttalax Express is a local laxative from the group of diphenylmethane derivatives with a slight antiresorptive effect. After hydrolysis in the large intestine, bisacodyl stimulates its peristalsis and promotes accumulation of water and electrolytes in the large intestine lumen. This leads to stimulation of defecation, reduction of evacuation time and softening of stools.

The action is due to direct stimulation of nerve endings in the mucosa of the large intestine.

The time of development of the laxative effect of the drug is 20 minutes, in some cases – 45 minutes.

Bisacodyl being a laxative, acting at the level of the large intestine, stimulates the natural process of evacuation in the lower parts of the gastrointestinal tract.

Interaction

Diuretics or glucocorticosteroids may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalances (hypokalemia) when taking excessively high doses of this drug.

The electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia) may lead to hypersensitivity to the action of cardiac glycosides.

Directions for use

In constipation

Adults and children over 10 years of age – 1 suppository per day.

Do not exceed the maximum recommended daily dose (10 mg).

The suppository is inserted into the rectum with the pointed end forward.

It takes about 20 minutes (10 minutes to 30 minutes) to take effect.

Do not use daily without consulting a doctor and determining the cause of the constipation for more than 10 days.

In preparation for research, pre- and post-operative treatment

The drug should be used under medical supervision in preparation for research, pre- and post-operative treatment and medical conditions which require relief of defecation. It is recommended in combination with tablets to achieve complete emptying. In addition to 2-4 tablets taken the day before, one suppository in the morning is recommended.

The decision about the number of pills of the drug to take the day before an examination/surgery is made by the attending physician, based on the patient’s clinical condition and the volume of the upcoming manipulation.

Special Instructions

Prolonged use may lead to fluid loss, electrolyte imbalance, hypokalemia and dehydration, which may be accompanied by symptoms such as thirst and oliguria. Dehydration can be harmful to the body (e.g., in renal failure, elderly patients), so if the above symptoms occur, the drug should be discontinued and can only be restarted under medical supervision.

Patients may have traces of blood in their stools; this is usually mild and resolves on its own.

Dizziness and fainting have been observed in patients who have taken this medication. Analysis has shown that these cases are related to fainting while defecating (or fainting caused by straining to defecate), or to a vasovagal reaction to abdominal pain, which may be due to constipation and is unrelated to the drug.
