The drug belongs to the antimicrobial and antiprotozoal agents.
It has bacteriostatic action against microbes.
The mechanism of action is disruption of activity of some enzyme systems of bacteria.
Spectrum of action: gram-positive cocci (Streptococcus, Staphylococcus), gram-negative bacilli (Escherichia, Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter), protozoa (Lamblia). Among intestinal pathogens the most sensitive are dysentery, typhoid and paratyphoid pathogens. Resistance develops slowly.

How to take, the dosage
Ingestion, after meals with plenty of fluids.
In dysentery, paratyphoid, food toxic infections adults are prescribed 100-150 mg 4 times a day, after meals, for 5-10 days. Doses to children are reduced according to their age.
The duration of treatment depends on the nature and severity of the infection.
The drug can be administered in the same dosage in cycles of 3-6 days at intervals of 3-4 days. It is not recommended to take the drug for more than 10 days.
In trichomonad urethitis, take orally 100 mg 4 times a day for 3 days.
In giardiasis adults are prescribed 100 mg 4 times a day. For children at the rate of 10 mg/kg per day in 3-4 doses.
The maximum dose for adults is a single dose of 200 mg, daily – 800 mg.
Interaction
Antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, ephedrine, amphetamine, phenylephedrine, tyramine may cause a sharp increase in blood pressure.
The agents that alkalize the urine reduce the effect (accelerate excretion with the urine), acidifying agents increase it. Aminoglycosides and tetracycline increase antimicrobial properties.
Increases suppression of hematopoiesis against chloramphenicol and ristomycin.
Special Instructions
Increases sensitivity to the effects of ethanol.
Drugs that alkalize the urine decrease the effect and those that acidify the urine increase it.

In treatment, the same precautions as with monoamine oxidase inhibitors must be taken, namely, avoiding foods containing tyramine in the diet: cheese, cream, beans, pickled herring, and strong coffee.
In order to prevent neuritis with long-term use, it should be combined with B vitamins.
Contraindications
– pregnancy and lactation;
– terminal stage of chronic renal failure;
– glucose-6-dehydrogenase deficiency;
– childhood age less than 1 year;
– increased individual sensitivity to the group of nitrofurans.
Side effects
In some cases, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, allergic reactions (skin rash, hyperemia and itching of the skin, allergic edema) may occur.
In long-term use – neuritis.
Overdose
Symptoms: acute toxic hepatitis, hematotoxicity, neurotoxicity (polyneuritis).
Treatment: withdrawal of drugs, plenty of fluids, symptomatic therapy, antihistamines, B vitamins.
