An antimicrobial drug, antibiotic of polycyclic structure, belongs to the group of fusidines. The mechanism of action is associated with disruption of protein synthesis in the bacterial cell.
Blocking elongation of factor G, it prevents its binding to ribosomes and guanosine triphosphate, which interrupts release of energy necessary for protein synthesis and leads to the death of the bacterial cell.
It is active against the microorganisms that most commonly cause eye infections: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae.
Entobacteriaciae and Pseudomonas spp. are resistant to the action of fusidic acid.
There are no reports of cross-resistance to fusidic acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Intake and distribution
The dosage form of the drug (viscous eye drops) provides prolonged contact with the conjunctiva and sufficient concentration of fusidic acid in the lacrimal fluid if used 2 times a day.
1, 3, 6, and 12 hours after a single application of Fucitalmik, the average concentration of fusidic acid in the lacrimal fluid is 15.7; 15.2; 10.5, and 5.6 µg/ml, respectively. In intraocular fluid, fusidic acid concentrations of 0.3 µg/ml (after single administration) and 0.8 µg/ml (after repeated administration) are reached within 1 h after administration and maintained for at least 12 h, with no detectable fusidic acid in serum.
Elimination
Extracted mainly with the bile. Urinary excretion is less than 1% of the dose.
Indications
Bacterial eye infections: conjunctivitis; blepharitis; keratitis; dacryocystitis.

Special Instructions
Long-term use of the antimicrobial may lead to superinfections caused by microorganisms resistant to this drug, including fungi.
The tube should be closed after each use. The tip of the tube should not be touched on the eye.
Wearing contact lenses while using Fucitalmik is not recommended. Fusidic acid microcrystals may cause scratches on the lenses or cornea.

Side effects
Rarely – allergic reactions in the form of edema of the follicles of the transitional fold of the conjunctiva and urticaria.
Itching, burning, conjunctival hyperemia, pain, lacrimation, eyelid edema, exacerbation of conjunctivitis are possible.
Therapy with Fucitalmic should be discontinued if signs of hypersensitivity to the drug appear.
Overdose
