Folates are natural water-soluble compounds based on folic acid, generally making up vitamin B9. They are found in leafy greens, green vegetables, legumes, etc. The synthetic form of vitamin B9 is the well-known folic acid.

The neural tube begins to form in the first days after conception: if the body is deficient in folate by this time, it can lead to neural tube defects. Later this is fraught with serious malformations – hydrocephalus, anencephaly (no brain), mental and physical developmental delays, spinal cord cleavage. Statistics show that roughly 300,000 children a year are born worldwide with anencephaly and spinal cleft*. In addition, vitamin B9 deficiency during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, premature birth and anemia.

Common, artificially synthesized folic acid pills, like folate from food, have no biological activity of their own. In order to be absorbed and act, they must go through a long and complex cycle of transformation, the result of which is the single active form of folic acid, monoglutamate 5-MTGF, or methylfolate.

Evalar has developed Folate 400 mcg. – product with an optimal content of the active form of folic acid with high bioavailability – methylfolate, in the form of tablets for swallowing. Unlike usual folic acid, methylfolate is easier to absorb and starts to work much faster.
