Carnitine is a vitamin-like substance that performs a number of important functions in the body. Its most important function is active participation in cellular energy metabolism.

L-carnitine transports fat in the form of long-chain fatty acids to special intracellular structures called mitochondria where they are converted through a process of β-oxidation into ATP, a universal source of energy for all processes occurring in the body.
