Doxycycline is a broad spectrum antibacterial, bacteriostatic, antibacterial.

Blocks protein synthesis in the cells of microorganisms.

Pharmacodynamics

Active against Gram-positive cocci (S.aureus), coagulase-negative staphylococci, streptococci (S.pneumoniae, S.pyogenes – group A, S.agalactiae – group B, S.viridans, strains of A.israelii, B.anthracis, L. monocytogenes), Gram-negative cocci (N.meningitidis, N.gonorrhoeae, B.catarrhalis), bacilli (Bordetella, Brucella spp, Calymmatobacterium granulomatis, Campylobacter spp., F.tularensis, H.influenzae, H.ducreyi, Legionella, P.multocida, Yersinia spp.), Vibrionaceae strains (V.cholerae, V.parahaemolyticus), other microorganisms (Helicobacter pylori, Chlamydia spp, Rickettsia spp., Coxiella spp.), spirochetes (Borrelia burgdorferi, Leptospira interrogans, Treponema pallidum), Mycobacterium spp., Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Ureaplasma urealyticum as well as protozoa (Plasmodium falciparum, Entamoeba histolytica).

Pharmacokinetics

It is quite well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Binds to blood proteins by 80-90%. It is well soluble in fats and easily penetrates into biological fluids, including aqueous moisture and tissues. T_1/2 is 15-25 h. Most of it is excreted with feces, about 40% is excreted with urine.

How to take, the dosage

Adults on the 1st day of treatment are prescribed the drug in a daily dose of 200 mg. On the following days – 100-200 mg per day, depending on the severity of the disease.

The number of times the preparation is administered 1-2 times a day.

In children over 8 years of age with body weight of over 50 kg the daily dose of the preparation on the 1st day of treatment is 4 mg/kg, on the next days – 2-4 mg/kg/day, depending on the severity of the clinical course of the disease.

In case of primary and secondary syphilis the drug is prescribed in a daily dose of 300 mg for at least 10 days.

In case of gonorrheal infection, 100 mg twice daily for women and 100 mg twice daily for men or 300 mg once daily.

Interaction

It enhances the effect of coumarin derivatives and sulfonylureas; inhibits – penicillin, oral contraceptives.

Barbiturates, carbamazepine, diphenylhydantoin, primidone, alcohol accelerate metabolism.

Special Instructions

It should be borne in mind that the use in the third trimester of pregnancy and in the first years of life of the child may cause irreversible changes in the color and structure of the teeth.

Doxycycline solution is incompatible with drugs that have an alkaline pH, as well as – unstable in an acidic environment (aminophylline, hydrocortisone, erythromycin).

Avoid sun exposure.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, porphyria, severe liver failure, pregnancy, lactation, age under 9 years.

Side effects

Possible: nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, allergic reactions as swelling, itching, skin rash.

Rarely: Quincke’s edema, photosensitization.

Pregnancy use

Doxycycline is contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding and children under 8 years of age.
