Levamisole is an antihelminthic drug.
Acting on ganglion-like formations of nematodes, Decaris causes depolarizing neuromuscular paralysis of muscle membrane of helminths, blocks succinate dehydrogenase, inhibits fumarate dehydrogenase, disrupting the bioenergetic processes of helminths.
Thus, paralyzed nematodes are removed from the body by normal intestinal peristalsis within 24 hours after taking the drug.
Indications
Active ingredient
Composition
Tablets.
1 tablet contains:
Active substance:
levamisole hydrochloride – 177 mg, which corresponds to the content of levamisole – 150 mg.
Auxiliary substances:
corn starch,
lactose monohydrate,
.
sucrose,
talc,
povidone,
Magnesium stearate.
How to take, the dosage
1 tablet 150 mg.
Interaction
Disulfiram-like phenomena are observed when taking the drug simultaneously with alcoholic beverages.
Precaution is required when using Decaris with drugs affecting hematopoiesis.
In concomitant use of the drug with coumarin-like anticoagulants, prothrombin time may increase, so the dose of the oral anticoagulant should be adjusted. Decaris increases the level of phenytoin in blood, therefore it is necessary to control the level of phenytoin in blood if they are used simultaneously.
Decaris should not be used concomitantly with lipophilic drugs such as tetrachloromethane, tetrachloroethylene, chenopodium oil, chloroform or ether, as its toxicity may be increased.
Special Instructions
At the time of and after taking the drug, no alcoholic beverages should be consumed within 24 hours. There is insufficient evidence that levamisole, used as an anthelminthic agent, depresses the nervous system.
The effect of the drug on driving and other machinery
Because transient, mild dizziness may occur while taking the drug, caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery during the entire course of treatment.
Contraindications
With caution: patients with renal and/or hepatic failure, inhibition of bone marrow hematopoiesis.
Side effects
Headache, insomnia, dizziness, palpitations, seizures, dyspeptic complaints (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea).
There have been reports of CNS side effects (encephalopathy) 2-5 weeks after taking the drug, as well as allergic reactions (skin rash) and seizures.
In most patients, these effects were reversible, and early use of glucocorticosteroid therapy improved the prognosis.
The association of these symptoms with the administration of Decaris is not entirely convincing. Leukopenia, agranulocytosis, and tremor may occur with high doses or prolonged therapy.
Overdose
Symptoms: the following symptoms of intoxication have been described with a large dose of levamisole (over 600 mg): nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, seizures, diarrhea, headache, dizziness and confusion.
Treatment: in case of accidental overdose and if it is not long after taking the drug, gastric lavage is performed. Monitoring of vital body functions and symptomatic therapy are necessary. If there are signs of anticholinesterase action, atropine may be administered.
Pregnancy use
Prescription of the drug during pregnancy is possible only when the estimated benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.
If it is necessary to use the drug during breastfeeding, discontinuation of breastfeeding should be considered.
