Levamisole is an antihelminthic drug.
Acting on ganglion-like formations of nematodes, Decaris causes depolarizing neuromuscular paralysis of muscle membrane of helminths, blocks succinate dehydrogenase, inhibits fumarate dehydrogenase, disrupting the bioenergetic processes of helminths.
Thus, paralyzed nematodes are removed from the body by normal intestinal peristalsis within 24 hours after taking the drug.
Indications
Infections with helminths Ascaris lumbrocoides, Necator and Americanus Ancylostoma duodenale.
Pharmacological effect
Levamisole is an anthelmintic drug.
Acting on ganglion-like formations of nematodes, Dekaris causes depolarizing neuromuscular paralysis of the helminth muscle membrane, blocks succinate dehydrogenase, inhibits fumarate dehydrogenase, disrupting the course of bioenergetic processes of helminths.
Thus, paralyzed nematodes are removed from the body by normal intestinal motility within 24 hours after taking the drug.
Special instructions
During and after taking the drug, you should not drink alcohol for 24 hours. There is insufficient evidence that levamisole, used as an anthelmintic, depresses the nervous system.
The effect of the drug on the ability to drive a car and other mechanisms
Due to the fact that when taking the drug, transient, mild dizziness may occur, care should be taken when driving a car or when working with machinery during the entire course of treatment.
Active ingredient
Levamisole
Composition
Pills.
1 tablet contains:
Active substance:
levamisole hydrochloride – 177 mg, which corresponds to the content of levamisole – 150 mg.
Excipients:
corn starch,
lactose monohydrate,
sucrose,
talc,
povidone,
magnesium stearate.
Pregnancy
Prescribing the drug during pregnancy is possible only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
If it is necessary to use the drug during breastfeeding, the issue of stopping breastfeeding should be decided.
Contraindications
Drug-induced agranulocytosis (history).
Children under 3 years of age.
Breastfeeding period.
150 mg tablets are not prescribed to children.
With caution: patients with renal and/or liver failure, with suppression of bone marrow hematopoiesis.
Side Effects
Headache, insomnia, dizziness, palpitations, convulsions, dyspeptic symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea).
There are reports of the development of side effects from the central nervous system (encephalopathy) 2-5 weeks after taking the drug, as well as allergic reactions (skin rash), seizures.
In most patients, these effects were reversible, and early use of glucocorticosteroid therapy improved the prognosis.
The connection of these symptoms with taking Decaris is not entirely convincing. When using large doses or with long-term therapy, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, and tremor may occur.
Interaction
When taking the drug simultaneously with alcoholic beverages, disulfiram-like phenomena are observed.
Caution is required when using Decaris with drugs that affect hematopoiesis.
When taking the drug simultaneously with coumarin-like anticoagulants, the prothrombin time may increase, so it is necessary to adjust the dose of the oral anticoagulant. Decaris increases the level of phenytoin in the blood, therefore, when using them simultaneously, it is necessary to control the level of phenytoin in the blood.
Decaris should not be used simultaneously with lipophilic drugs such as carbon tetrachloride, tetrachlorethylene, chenopodium oil, chloroform or ether, as its toxicity may increase.
Overdose
Symptoms: with the administration of a large dose of levamisole (over 600 mg), the following signs of intoxication have been described: nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, convulsions, diarrhea, headache, dizziness and confusion.
Treatment: in case of accidental overdose and if not much time has passed after taking the drug, gastric lavage is performed. It is necessary to monitor the vital functions of the body and carry out symptomatic therapy. If there are signs of anticholinesterase action, atropine can be administered.
