Pharmacological action

When taken orally it is broken down by lipase in the small intestine to form ricinoleic acid, which irritates the intestinal receptors throughout its length and reflex enhancement of peristalsis. The laxative effect usually comes after 5-6 hours. When taking castor oil there is also an increase in contraction of the uterine muscles.
