Buscopan, rectal 10 mg 10 pcs

The drug Buscopan has antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles of internal organs, reduces secretion of digestive glands.

As a quaternary ammonium derivative, it does not pass through the GEB, so it has no anticholinergic effect on the CNS.

How to take, the dosage

Rectally (suppositories), if not prescribed otherwise, adults and children over 6 years of age – 1-2 suppositories. 3 times a day.

The suppositories should be removed from the sheath and inserted into the rectum with the pointed end forward.

The duration of use is determined by the doctor.

Interaction

Buscopan® may increase the anticholinergic effects of tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, antipsychotics, quinidine, amantadine, disopyramide, anticholinergic drugs (e.g. tiotropium bromide, ipratropium bromide, atropine-like compounds).

The simultaneous use of Buscopan® and dopamine antagonists (e.g., metoclopramide) leads to a decrease in the gastrointestinal effects of both drugs.

Buskopan may increase tachycardia caused by beta-adrenomimetics.

Special Instructions

The drug is prescribed with caution in case of suspected intestinal obstruction (including pylorus stenosis), urinary tract obstruction (including benign prostatic hyperplasia), susceptibility to tachyarrhythmia (including atrial fibrillation).

Buskopan should be used with caution in people whose work requires increased visual acuity.

Side effects

Overdose

There are currently no cases of overdose of Buscopan, so the following symptoms and recommendations are theoretical.

Symptoms: urinary retention, dry mouth, flushed skin, tachycardia, depression of gastrointestinal motility, transient visual disturbances.

Treatment: gastric lavage with activated charcoal and then 15% magnesium sulfate solution. Further use of cholinomimetics is indicated.

In case of glaucoma pilocarpine is prescribed topically (in the form of eye drops).

If necessary, cholinomimetics for systemic use are indicated (e.g., neostigmine 0.5-2.5 mg administered w/in or w/in); supportive and symptomatic therapy; intubation and AVR if respiratory muscle paralysis is indicated; bladder catheterization if urinary retention is indicated.
