Pharmgroup:
m-cholinoblocker.
Pharmic action:
Buskopan is a m-cholinoreceptor blocker.
It has an antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscle of the internal organs, reduces the secretion of digestive glands.
It does not penetrate through the GEB (as hyoscine butyl bromide is a quaternary ammonium derivative); therefore it has no anticholinergic effect on the CNS.

– Gall colic;
– spastic dyskinesia of the biliary tract and gall bladder;
– cholecystitis;
– intestinal colic;

Adults and children over 6 years of age are prescribed orally 1 to 2 tablets 3-5 times a day.
The tablets should be taken orally with water.
Interaction
Buscopan® may increase the anticholinergic effects of tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, quinidine, amantadine, disopyramide, anticholinergic drugs (e.g. tiotropium bromide, ipratropium bromide).
The simultaneous use of Buscopan and dopamine antagonists (e.g., metoclopramide) leads to a decrease in the gastrointestinal effects of both drugs.
Buskopan® may increase tachycardia caused by beta-adrenomimetics.
Special Instructions
With caution, the drug is prescribed in case of suspected intestinal obstruction (including pylorus stenosis), urinary tract obstruction (including prostatic adenoma), susceptibility to tachyarrhythmia (including atrial fibrillation), closed-angle glaucoma.
The tablet of Buscopan contains 41.2 mg of sucrose. The maximum recommended daily dose contains 411.8 mg of sucrose.
Contraindications
– myasthenia gravis;
– megacolon;
– children under 6 years of age;
– hypersensitivity to the components of the drug Buscopan.
Side effects
Side effects associated with the cholin-blocking effect of the drug: dry mouth, dry skin, tachycardia; urinary retention is possible (usually mild and resolves itself).
Allergic reactions: in rare cases – skin manifestations, anaphylaxis with episodes of difficulty in breathing.
Overdose
At present, no cases of overdose of Buscopan® have been described, therefore the following symptoms and recommendations are theoretical.
Symptoms: anticholinergic effects are possible – urinary retention, dry mouth, skin redness, tachycardia, inhibition of GI motility, transient visual disturbances.
Treatment: use of cholinomimetics is indicated. In glaucoma pilocarpine is prescribed topically (in the form of eye drops).
If necessary, cholinomimetics for systemic use are indicated (e.g., neostigmine 0.5-2.5 mg administered intravenously or intravenously); cardiovascular complications are treated according to the usual therapeutic rules; supportive and symptomatic therapy; intubation and AVR if respiratory muscle paralysis is indicated; bladder catheterization if urinary retention is indicated.
Pregnancy use
The use of the drug Buscopan during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding) is possible only when the estimated benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or the infant.
