Breast elixir is an expectorant.

Pharmacodynamics

The expectorant effect of Chest Elixir is due to the action of its constituents:

The licorice extract thick has anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, which are associated with its content of glycyrrhizin, which stimulates the activity of the ciliary epithelium in the trachea and bronchi, and increases the secretory function of the mucous membranes of the upper airways;

Anise oil has expectorant action due to the content of anetol in the oil, which contributes to reflex excitation of breathing, increased activity of respiratory ciliated epithelium and increased secretion by mucous membrane of the larynx, trachea and bronchi;

Ammonia has irritant effect that leads to excitation of sensory nerve endings in the upper respiratory tract and reflex stimulation of respiratory center.

Indications

As an expectorant for infectious and inflammatory respiratory diseases accompanied by cough with sputum difficult to separate (including tracheitis, tracheobronchitis, bronchitis).

Composition

Active ingredients:

Liquorice extract dense 20.7 g;

Anise oil 0.34 g;

Ammonia solution concentrated 25% 1.38 g;

Excipients:

Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) 90% – 20.41 ml;

purified water – up to 100 ml

How to take, the dosage

Ingestion, 3-4 times a day. Adults – 20-40 drops, children are prescribed as many drops as the age of the child. Before use it should be diluted in a small amount of water.

The course of treatment is 7-10 days. It is possible to increase the duration and conduct repeated courses of treatment upon the recommendation of the doctor.

Interaction

If necessary, it can be used in combination with antibiotics and other drugs. It should not be used simultaneously with anti-cough drugs, since it makes it difficult to cough up the liquefied sputum.

Special Instructions

The drug contains 90% ethyl alcohol. The content of absolute ethyl alcohol in one drop of the drug is 0.0075 g, in maximum single dose for adults – up to 0.3 g, in maximum daily dose – up to 1.2 g.

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and engage in other potentially dangerous activities. During treatment, caution should be exercised while driving and engaging in other potentially hazardous activities requiring increased concentration and quick psychomotor reactions.

Contraindications

With caution: liver disease, alcoholism, traumatic brain injury, children.

Side effects

Allergic reactions may occur, and in some cases diarrhea may be observed.

Overdose

Symptoms: with long-term use in excess of the indicated dosages hypokalemia, increased BP, peripheral edema due to impaired water-salt metabolism are possible.

Treatment: symptomatic.
