Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the group of semisynthetic penicillins with a broad spectrum of action. The effect of amoxicillin comes on very quickly. Like other penicillin antibiotics, it inhibits the synthesis of the cell wall.

Amoxicillin acts bactericidally and is active against Gram-positive cocci (Staphylococcus spp, Streptococcus pneumoniae, group A, B, C, G, H, I, M streptococci); Gram-negative cocci (Neisseria meningitidis, N. gonorrhoeae); Gram-negative bacilli (Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella, Campilobacter, Haemophilus influenzae, Bordetella pertussis, Chlamydia).

Amoxicillin is active against all microorganisms sensitive to penicillin G: Erysipelothrix rhysiopathiae, Corynebacterium, Bacillus anthracis, Actinomycetes, Streptobacilli, Spirillium minus, Pastereulla multocida, Listeria, Spirochaeta (Leptospira, Treponema, Borrelia), etc., as well as various anaerobic microorganisms (including peptococci, peptostreptococci, clostridia and fusobacteria).

Amoxicillin is resistant to strains of microorganisms producing beta-lactamases.

Amoxicillin is acid resistant and therefore effective with oral administration.

Indications

Bacterial infections caused by pathogens sensitive to Amoxicillin:

– acute and chronic respiratory tract infections (angina, acute otitis media, pharyngitis, sinusitis; acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, lung abscess);
– Acute and chronic infections of the gastrointestinal tract and biliary tract (peritonitis, cholecystitis, intestinal infections);
– Acute and chronic infections of the urinary system (pyelonephritis, urethritis, gonorrhea);
– purulent soft tissue infections;
– sepsis.

Active ingredient

Composition

1 tablet contains amoxicillin trihydrate 500 mg.

How to take, the dosage

Adults are prescribed 500 mg 3 times per day. In severe course of the disease – 1 g 3 times a day.

Children of 5-10 years of age are prescribed 250 mg 3 times a day, children 2-5 years of age – 125 mg 3 times a day, children under 2 years of age – at the rate of 20 mg/kg of body weight (divided into 3 doses). The course of treatment is 5-12 days. The interval between the doses is 8 hours.

For treatment of acute uncomplicated gonorrhea 3 g (in combination with 1 g probenecid) is prescribed once.

Women are recommended to repeat the above dose after 24 hours.

Interaction

Simultaneous use of the drug with probenecid leads to increased concentration of amoxicillin in the blood due to its reduced excretion by the kidneys. In this case, the penetration of amoxicillin into the tissues may decrease.

Special Instructions

In patients with hypersensitivity to cephalosporins, carbapenems the possibility of cross-allergy should be considered.

In severe gastrointestinal tract infections accompanied by persistent diarrhea or vomiting amoxicillin should not be administered orally because of the possibility of poor absorption.

The use of antibiotics is ineffective in the treatment of acute respiratory viral infections.

Particular caution should be exercised in patients with allergic diathesis or bronchial asthma and hay fever (pollinosis), gastrointestinal diseases in the history (especially colitis associated with antibiotic use).

In case of prolonged use of Amoxicillin, nystatin, levorin or other antifungal drugs should be prescribed simultaneously.

In prolonged use of high doses of the drug in patients the parameters of liver and kidney function should be monitored, general urinalysis should be carried out. It is reasonable to monitor the peripheral blood count.

Contraindications

– hypersensitivity to penicillins;
– infectious mononucleosis.

Side effects

Allergic reactions: urticaria, skin rash, erythema, exanthema, Quincke’s edema, rhinitis, conjunctivitis,

photosensitization; rarely – fever, joint pain, eosinophilia; in single cases – anaphylactic shock.

Others: possible development of superinfection with the appearance of liquid stools, nausea.
