Ammonia is an analeptic agent; it has a stimulating effect on the respiratory center – reflexively, acting through the receptors of the upper airways (trigeminal nerve endings). Inhalation of ammonia vapor in high concentrations causes reflex respiratory arrest.
In case of local application to the skin – antiseptic effect. In case of prolonged contact the irritating effect on skin and mucous membranes may transform into cauterizing effect (coagulation of proteins) with development of hyperemia, swelling and pain.
It is rapidly excreted with exhaled air.
Indications
Ammonia is used as an ambulance to induce breathing and bring patients out of fainting.
Topically: in the form of lotions for insect bites, as well as to neutralize acidic toxins in insect and snake bites.
