Ammonia, 10% 25 ml

An analeptic, antiseptic agent; when inhaled, it irritates mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and reflexively excites respiratory and vasomotor centers. In high concentrations it causes reflexive respiratory arrest.

It has disinfectant effect on skin. Irritating action on the skin may cause cauterization (coagulation of proteins) with development of hyperemia, swelling and pain.

Pharmacokinetics

The drug is rapidly excreted by any route of administration, mainly by the lungs and bronchial glands.

Indications

Fainting, hand skin disinfection, neutralization of acidic toxins in insect bites.

Concentrated – 44 ml

equivalent to 10 g ammonia

Ancillary substance:

Purified water – up to 100 ml

How to take, the dosage

Inhaled, externally.

To stimulate breathing and to bring patients out of fainting – inhalation: gently bring a small piece of absorbent cotton or gauze soaked in ammonia to the nasal openings (0.5-1 cm).

In surgical practice it is used for disinfection of hands according to the method of S.I. Spasokukotsky and I.G. Kochergin (to prepare the solution 25 ml of ammonia is dissolved in 5 liters of warm boiled water).

In case of insect bites it is used in the form of lotions.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity; when applied externally – violation of the integrity of the skin, inflammatory skin diseases (including dermatitis, eczema) and other skin conditions at the site of intended application.

With caution

Pregnancy, lactation, childhood.

Side effects

Stopped breathing, hypersalivation, sore throat, oral mucous membrane hyperemia, esophageal and gastric burns (if taken orally).
