The plant is herbaceous and takes the form of a shrub. Its leaves have an elongated shape and pointed at the ends, and the stem is straight and fairly dense. The flowers of the elecampane are quite large and eye-catching. Their color usually ranges from orangeish to yellow, which makes it possible to distinguish the plant and immediately recognize it without being confused with any other. Usually the elecampane is found in a meadow, near a body of water, or in a ditch or quarry. For use, tall plants with a broad, straight stem are preferred – their roots will do best.
The most preferable grass to use is that which is more than three years old, since younger plants do not yet contain as many beneficial properties, partly inferior to more mature plants. For further use, it is necessary to dig out the elecampane very carefully from the ground, shake it off slightly, remove the rhizome and stem, and wash the root itself in water. If the root is wide and dense, you need to cut it, and then spread it in one layer on a paper surface and let it dry. It is usually left for two or three days in the sunlight. It is better not to use an oven to dry the roots, otherwise all the medicinal effect of the plant will be lost.
