Proxymethacaine is a local anesthetic used in ophthalmology. The action of Alkaine usually develops 20-30 seconds after instillation and lasts for 15 minutes or longer.
Proxymethacaine inhibits the permeability of cell membranes to sodium ions, which prevents the generation of impulses in nerve endings and the conduction of impulses along nerve fibers.
Pharmacokinetics
In topical administration, systemic absorption is low.
Indications
Local anesthesia in ophthalmology for short-term diagnostic and therapeutic procedures requiring rapid and short-term anesthesia:
Active ingredient
Composition
1 ml of eye drops contains:
The active ingredient:
Proxymethacaine hydrochloride 5.0 mg;
Associates:
benzalkonium chloride, solution, equivalent to benzalkonium chloride,
glycerol,
p> hydrochloric acid concentrated and/or sodium hydroxide to adjust the pH,
purified water.
How to take, the dosage
Topically.
Push in 1-2 drops, just before the procedure.
Push 1-2 drops every 5-10 minutes (1-3 doses).
Push 1-2 drops every 5-10 minutes (3-5 doses). After surgical manipulation it is necessary to cover the eye with a bandage, because the “blink reflex” is temporarily eliminated.
Special Instructions
It is important to protect the eye from irritating chemicals, foreign bodies, and not to rub the eye during the entire period of anesthesia.
Patients should be warned not to touch the eye until the anesthetic has worn off.
The bottle should be closed after each use. The pipette tip should not be touched to the eye.
Contraindications
Individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug Alkaine.
With caution
Prescribe with caution to patients with allergic reactions, heart disease and hypothyroidism.
Side effects
It is generally well tolerated.
Itching, burning, and hyperemia of the conjunctiva may occur; lacrimation or rapid blinking.
Severe allergic reactions such as epithelial keratitis; corneal erosion, corneal filamentous infiltrates, and iritis may occur rarely and usually immediately after injection.
Long-term use may result in slower wound healing.
Possible systemic toxicity (which is manifested by central nervous system stimulation with subsequent suppression) should be kept in mind with long-term use, though if the drug is used topically as an anesthetic this reaction to it is extremely rare.
Pregnancy use
There is no sufficient experience in the use of Alkain during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children.
The drug may be used in children, during pregnancy and lactation by prescription of the attending physician if the expected therapeutic effect exceeds the risk of possible side effects.
