Pharmacological properties

Preparat has adsorptive and non-specific detoxifying effect. In the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract activated charcoal binds and removes from the body endogenous and exogenous toxic substances of various nature including microbes and microbial toxins, food allergens, medicines, poisons, alkaloids, salts of heavy metals and gases.

Indications

It is used as a detoxifying agent in exogenous and endogenous toxicosis of various nature.

In the complex treatment of food toxicosis, salmonellosis, dysentery.

In case of poisoning by drugs (psychotropic, sleeping pills, narcotics, etc.), alkaloids, salts of heavy metals and other poisons.

In case of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, accompanied by dyspepsia, flatulence.

In food and drug allergies.

In hyperbilirubinemia (viral hepatitis and other jaundice) and hyperazotemia (renal failure).

To reduce gas in the intestine before ultrasound and X-ray examination.

How to take, the dosage

Activated charcoal is used orally in tablets or, after prior crushing, as an aqueous suspension, one hour before meals and taking other medicines.

The dosage regimen for adults is 1-2 g on average 3-4 times a day, the maximum single dose is up to 8 g. For children the drug is prescribed in the average dose of 0.05 g/kg 3 times a day depending on the body weight; maximum single dose – up to 0.2 g/kg of body weight. Course of treatment for acute diseases – 3-5 days, with allergies and chronic diseases – up to 14 days. The second course in 2 weeks on the doctor’s recommendation.

In acute poisoning, treatment is prescribed with gastric lavage with activated charcoal suspension, then 20-30 g of the drug are given orally. In case of flatulence, 1-2 g of the drug is prescribed orally 3-4 times a day. The course of treatment is 3-7 days.
