The mask is a disposable medical device that covers the wearer’s mouth and nose and provides a barrier to direct transmission of infectious particles from the mask wearer to others.

The mask consists of a filter layer, which is placed between the two outer layers (three-layer masks), and a flexible aluminum insert that allows the mask to fit the shape of the nose. The mask is secured to the face with elastic ear loops.

The mask can be worn for anywhere from 2-6 hours, depending on environmental conditions.

In times of epidemics or in healthcare settings, a maximum of two hours is recommended.

If a mask is used to protect against something man-made, like smog, the wear time can be up to 6 hours.
