Megestrol acetate, which is a synthetic derivative of the progestagen hormone, has the property to inhibit the secretion of luteinizing (LH) and follicle stimulating (FSH) hormones, which are produced by the anterior pituitary lobe. When using the drug before the beginning of estrus (heat), the synthesis of estrogens by ovarian follicles is inhibited, which prevents the development of morphological and psychophysiological changes in females associated with the sexual cycle. When the drug is administered to females on day 2 or 3 from the beginning of estrus there is an interruption of heat.
In males megestrol acetate reduces the level of testosterone in blood and has an indirect effect on the regulation of sexual behavior and related behavioral reactions, reducing aggression, anxiety and increased excitability in the animal.
Megestrol acetate is easily adsorbed in intestine, biotransformed in liver and excreted as salts in urine within 1 – 2 days.
Stop-Intim tablets for cats refer to low-hazardous substances according to the degree of impact on the body (4th class of hazard according to GOST 12.1.007-76). In recommended doses they have no hepatotoxic, mutagenic and sensitizing effect.
