Cabergoline is a derivative of ergoline (ergot alkaloid) that has a stimulating effect on the dopamine receptors of the hypothalamic-pituitary system involved in the secretion of the main lactogenesis hormone prolactin and has an inhibitory effect on its secretion. Apart from its influence on prolactin-dependent processes, cabergoline has no effect on other endocrine processes. The use of halastop prevents lactation, enlargement of mammary glands and development of lactational mastitis. Decrease of prolactin level contributes to quick disappearance of signs of false pregnancy, as well as changes in the behavior of the animal. When used concomitantly with dopamine receptor blockers, the effectiveness of galastop decreases.
