Pharmacological action:
A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. Indiscriminately inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2) and inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins.
Phenylbutazone inhibits the synthesis of ATP-dependent mucopolysaccharides.
Butadione is used to relieve pain syndrome and reduce swelling associated with inflammation. When applied topically, it causes alleviation or disappearance of joint pain at rest and during movement. It reduces morning stiffness and swelling of the joints and increases the range of motion.

- Posttraumatic inflammation of soft tissue and joints, for example as a result of tension, overstrain and contusions.
- Rheumatic soft tissue diseases (tendovaginitis, bursitis, periarticular tissue lesions), muscle pain of rheumatic and non-rheumatic origin.
- Pain syndrome and swelling associated with diseases of the muscles and joints.

How to take, the dosage
Externally.
Adults and children over 14 years of age: Apply the drug in a thin layer, 2-3 cm strip over the lesion of inflammation without rubbing 2-3 times a day.
The course of treatment is 7-10 days. After 10 days of application it is necessary to consult a doctor.
Elderly patients: No special regimen is necessary.
Interaction
No clinically significant interaction of the drug Butadion with other medicinal products has been established.
The co-administration of Butadion with other NSAIDs should be avoided.
Butadion may increase the effect of drugs that cause photosensitization.

Special Instructions
The therapy should be discontinued if redness of the skin occurs.
The ointment should be applied only to intact skin, avoiding contact with open wounds. No occlusive dressing should be applied after application. Avoid contact of the drug with eyes and mucous membranes.
The drug should not be used to treat deep vein thrombophlebitis of the extremities. To prevent photosensitization, the skin should be protected from direct sunlight. When combined with other dosage forms of Butadion, the maximum daily dose of this drug should be considered.
Influence on driving and operating machinery
There are no data on the effect of Butadion on the ability to drive and engage in other activities requiring concentration and quick psychomotor reactions.

Contraindications
- A history of bronchoobstruction, allergic rhinitis, urticaria after taking acetylsalicylic acid or other NSAIDs.
- I and III trimesters of pregnancy.
- Period of breastfeeding.
- Damage of skin integrity at the site of intended application.
- Children under 14 years of age.
- Combined use with other products containing phenylbutazone.
- High sensitivity to phenylbutazone or other drug components, acetylsalicylic acid and other NSAIDs.
Side effects
Local reactions: eczema, photosensitization, contact dermatitis (itching, redness, swelling of the treated skin area; papules, vesicles, peeling.
Allergic reactions: urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm, generalized skin rash.

Overdose
Extremely low absorption of the active ingredients of the drug when used topically makes overdose almost impossible.
Symptoms: accidental ingestion of large amounts of ointment (more than 20 g) may cause systemic adverse reactions characteristic of NSAIDs.
Treatment: gastric lavage, activated charcoal administration is necessary.

Pregnancy use
The drug is contraindicated in the I and III trimesters of pregnancy due to the possibility of fetal abnormalities.
In the second trimester of pregnancy the use of Butadion is possible only when the estimated benefits to the mother exceed the potential risk to the fetus.
If it is necessary to use the drug during lactation, it is recommended to stop breastfeeding.
